YOLANDA T. MARSHALL
Born in the garden city of Georgetown, Guyana, this beautiful rose blooms poetically. Her words are as fluid as water on a thirsty tongue. Readers can swallow every emotional line and message from one with an old soul. It is her soul that speaks through her pen, on her paper. Miss Marshall silently commands you to read and digest life’s dynamic motions.
At the tender age of 13, Miss Marshall made Toronto Canada her home. The oldest of three girls, she began writing poems at the age of 8. As daughter of a talented Guitarist, her lyrics manifest into poetry, like a genetic code. Poems such as “Serenaded in New York,” “Delia Sings the Blues” and “Single Rose” flow on a mellow Jazz -like note.
The word Obayifo originates from the Ashanti tribe. It is the name given to a living African Witch. The poem visits a cultural tone as it touches the works of Obeah, it’s people and fears. Miss Marshall’s dynamic ability to address matters of the heart are limitless. She takes on an erotic tone in, “Midnight Wet Dreams”, a raw display of poetic sex. One all time favorite remains, “Train Ride To Babylon”, Miss Marshall questions religion, as she explores the mind of an experienced older woman – offering her reader a glimpse into the life of a black woman’s struggles with poverty within a commercialized society.
Simply human, is what Yolanda T. Marshall, a University of Toronto Student, would say to describe her demeanor. She is extraordinary, taking your life away for a moment with every written word. Poetry allows her to express life in it’s most artistic form, and she plans to share her inspiration for years to come.
